Executive Order 13423

On January 24, 2007, President Bush signed into effect Executive Order 13423 which sets environmental goals for all federal agencies:

“It is the policy of the United States that Federal agencies conduct their environmental, transportation, and energy-related activities under the law in support of their respective missions in an environmentally, economically and fiscally sound, integrated, continuously improving, efficient, and sustainable manner.”

In brief, the order sets these goals:

  • improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • increase use of renewable energy
  • reduce water consumption intensity
  • require sustainability in agency acquisitions of goods and services
  • minimize waste
  • construct energy efficient buildings
  • manage energy efficient vehicle fleets
  • use energy-efficient products

CICS can help by reviewing the management and procurement policies as documented for your agency and auditing the agency practices against the policy and Executive Order.
