GHG Verification - Maritime / Shipping

As transportation increasingly falls under the regulated emissions verification market, the global shipping industry is expected to be included from 2013 in the EU ETS Scheme (Phase III). With extensive EU ETS experience in other industry sectors, CICS is well placed to offer verification services to the shipping industry as new regulations come into force.

The exact rules are still being formulated at the commission level but it is expected to be on a sectoral rather than a national basis. The scheme may even be beyond EUETS and be a truly international sectoral scheme across all continents. At CICS, we are keeping abreast of all the ongoing stakeholder consultations and will release more detail about our verification offering as the guidelines become clearer.

In the meantime, CICS is already verifying shipping and maritime emissions as part of work in carbon footprinting where mobile emissions include those from water borne transportation (e.g. The Climate Registry).

Thanks to our international presence and our achievement of ISO 14065 in early 2009 (an internationally accepted standard for accreditation of verifiers), we are more than ready to serve the shipping industry in the future.

    For clients who are performing carbon footprinting, including distribution, which can involve complex arrangements with hauliers and/or owned transportation, CICS verifiers can help you unravel the complexities of calculating emissions to the client’s "gate".
  • PAS 2050
    CICS is only one of four verification bodies in the UK that is accredited to verify against the PAS 2050 Standard (for the carbon footprinting of goods and services across the full lifecycle) and the associated Code of Good Practice by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service).
